Debunking the Myth of “I don’t have time”

One of the biggest excuses people give me about why they can’t grow their social media channels is because they don’t have time.

This excuse is total crap!

Let me show you why:

There are 168 hours in a week.

My first job out of college, I worked 10+ hour shifts, (typically) five days a week

My commute was an hour so if I worked five days, there goes 55 hours of my week.

I sleep about eight hours a night and 8 (hours) x 7 (days a week) = 56 hours.

Doing the math:  56 hours of sleep + 55 hours of work = 111 hours.

If you take 111 away from 168, then you’re left with 57 hours.

57 remaining hours divided by 7 is slightly more than 8 hours a day to do WHATEVER I/we want!

Most of you reading this blog post don’t even work ten hour days with a one hour commute.

Maybe you have a part time job or you work 8 or 9 hours.

If you’re a student, you’re going to spend at least 8 hours a day studying or in class, so we’re the same. It’s fine.

Now, I realize some of you may even work MORE than I did, or maybe you have a longer commute so it takes away more of your time, but we’re just going to say that each of us has 8 hours a day that we get to CHOOSE what we WANT to do.

 

Today, the average person spends between 4-6 hours on their phone each day.

Most of those hours don’t occur while we are sleeping or while we are working.

If you spent 4-6 hours a day on your phone that means you’re left with 2-4 hours of free time.

Factor in exercise, taking time to eat, go to the bathroom, get ready for the day, get ready to go to sleep, etc., and we have even less than 2-4 hours each day.

 

This is why we feel like we have no time to do anything, my friend!

There are so many things we do that take up our free time but in all reality, it’s our CHOICE what we do with these other 8 hours.

 

With that, I have a proposition for you:

I want you to do something I have my coaching clients do and it has changed their life.

I’m going to help you free up more of your time.

In this exercise, you’re going to eliminate the excessive amount of time you spend on your phone and email every day.

Here’s what I want you to do:

In the morning when you wake up, do not get on your phone.

Just get up and get ready for the day.

Getting ready for the day entails taking care of pets, kids, getting yourself showered and dressed or hair and makeup, eating breakfast – whatever your routine is.

Once you are done with the above, check your social media channels and email for the first time.

You’ll post if you need/want to, check all of your email and respond back to the things that need to be addressed immediately and then you will put your phone away.

You have 20 minutes (maximum – you can use less time) to do this.

You won’t take it out again until after lunch.

After lunch you can do social media and email for another 20 minutes.

Your third and final time is after work / before dinner – 20 minutes only.

This will be very hard.

It’s hard because most of us actually have an addiction to our phones.

Some of us realize we do and some of us don’t.

I promise if you do this, it’s going to change your life.

 

I want to share the experience I had the first time I did this with a client.

I put her through the exercise and she wrote this email to me during the 2nd day she’d been doing the exercise:

“What I loved most about yesterday was the freedom I had and control over my day. I also felt a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day and like I could actually achieve the things I needed to do vs. feeling overwhelmed and anxious about my to-do list.

The hardest thing was fighting the completely unconscious urges to constantly check my email/my phone/my Instagram. I caught myself doing it throughout the day. This morning was actually harder than yesterday. I think because yesterday I had a plan to not check anything where this morning I woke up treating it like any other day and my first instinct was to grab my phone. I held off though and didn’t check email or Instagram until after I ate breakfast and walked the dogs.

I learned that I have a serious problem. Haha, jk, sort of. I was kind of shocked by how I just unconsciously and instinctively reach for my phone to check my email and Instagram ALL THE TIME. I don’t even know how I ever get anything done with the amount of time I was spending on those things. I realized I really don’t need to spend so much time on either, and stepping away from both of them, creating boundaries/time limits, gave me so much freedom and brain space that I haven’t had in a really long time. I already feel like I’ve gotten over the urge and feeling of needing to respond to people immediately but I have to be very conscious and aware of my behavior because I can see myself easily slipping back into old habits. It’s a new routine I need to get used to, but it’s one I like much more than my old one.

I can’t believe what a cluster f%&k I’ve been for the last few years. I still have a ways to go but this exercise was insanely eye opening.”

Isn’t that INCREDIBLE? She literally felt like she could achieve things she needed to do and not feel so overwhelmed or anxious about her to do list.

Her life changed, overnight!

I’ve had several other people do this, and they all experienced similar results.

This is a special exercise – I hope you try it.

The truth is, you and I don’t actually suffer from a lack of time.

What we suffer from is an overabundance of distractions.

This overabundance of distractions is ruining our lives.

I believe it is possible to take the distractions out and replace them with the things that will help us achieve our goals and reach our desired level of success.
